Spirit of JSU
Jacksonville, Alabama
Spirit Drum & Bugle Corps is the summer performance ensemble of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. The corps was founded in 1976 and first competed in 1977, placing 23rd in the DCI Championship - a feat that at the time had never been achieved by a first year corps. Since that time, Spirit has enjoyed top twelve status thirteen times.
Although most of its members are from Alabama and Georgia, the popularity of Spirit has attracted members from all over the United States, Canada, and even Great Britain and Japan. Spirit is open to all young people from age 16 to 21. Members are selected by audition based on musical ability, marching skill, attitude, discipline, dedication, and commitment, and receive college credit for their membership.
Objectives of the corps are:
- To provide an opportunity to develop individual potential and to perform at the highest level of the activity.
- To foster teamwork, friendship, respect for others and property.
- To serve as ambassadors of Jacksonville State University and the State of Alabama.
- To entertain our audiences.
- To have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
- Membership in Spirit challenges a young person in many ways: developing self-confidence, self-discipline and individual skills.
